Our wonderful partnership with Southern Cross Soloists continues in 2019, with our SXS Coffee Conversations Series

These free events will take place on the Friday night before each of SXS's concert at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). It’s a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the 2019 guest virtuosos, composers and Soloists and gain insights about their lives and musical careers. We hope you join us!

Join us when we are Navigating by the Stars: featuring ABC presenter Lucas Burns

Lucas Burns’s two love affairs are with music and radio. The first, with music, began 30 years ago when the local butcher asked his dad if he’d be interested in learning cornet in the St Arnaud Brass Band. This in turn led to trumpet lessons and then the joys of jazz bands, brass bands, brass quintets, concert bands, musical theatre bands and, of course, orchestras. A music degree affirmed that a life in music would follow and Lucas has since played in and conducted many different ensembles.

The second with radio also began at high school, starting with an assignment about how a radio station works. He then managed to turn volunteering in administration, production and presentation at a community radio station into credit for part of his music degree and then co-presented and edited a weekly podcast for a few years about brass band music while living overseas. Returning from three years in Japan in 2008, he joined ABC Classic, giving him the chance to combine these two loves into his perfect job. He presents the weekend nightly program and also produces the ABC Classic concert recordings from Queensland. There’s not as much trumpet playing these days, and he spends the rest of his time sailing with his partner around the gorgeous Moreton Bay and racing short-handed up and down the Queensland coast.
