Cass Moriarty is in-conversation with award-winning author Mark Brandi for the launch of his new novel The Rip.
The Rip is an urban crime novel following a hidden trio of drifters and addicts in inner city Melbourne and is garnering pre-publication buzz from the likes of Sofie Laguna, Chris Hammer and Jock Serong. Mark’s inspiration comes from his intimate knowledge of Richmond where in 2017 heroin overdose deaths reached a 17-year high, with 34 of those deaths occurring in a four-block area. Crucially, it subverts some of the more paternalistic beliefs about the nature of homelessness and addiction. While faced with enormously challenging circumstances, both main characters are portrayed with respect and dignity, and not as passive victims of circumstance. Mark writes from a place of experience, having graduated with a criminal justice degree and worked in the prison system, he saw how pervasive and damaging drug-related incarceration can be.
Mark Brandi's bestselling novel, Wimmera, won the coveted British Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger, and was named Best Debut at the 2018 Australian Indie Book Awards. It was also shortlisted for the Australian Book Industry Awards Literary Fiction Book of the Year, and the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year. Mark's shorter work has appeared in The Guardian, The Age, The Big Issue, and in journals both here and overseas. His writing is also sometimes heard on ABC Radio National.
