The cafe dream: you leave your stressful career behind and become your own boss. You spend your days playing host, enjoying endless cups of coffee and meeting new people. You’re part of one happy coffee-loving family. Profit margins guaranteed if you understand basic maths. After all, it’s not rocket science. How hard can it be?

A surprising number of people from all walks of life aspire to own a cafe and live the dream. But what happens when they wake up and discover reality?

In Newbies in the Cafe, Judy examines the pros and cons of cafe ownership in Australia and shares the lessons she learned from her own experience. With 11 case studies from cafe newbies, and facts regarding business plans, financial targets, and promotional ideas, this book offers comprehensive, practical advice for anyone considering starting or buying a cafe.

Newbies in the Cafe is a positive book of real stories about cafe experiences. Its balanced and honest approach allows readers to consider the cafe reality, so they can embrace their cafe dream with confidence.

"...a must for all to read BEFORE they enter the world of cafe ownership so that they will move into it with their eyes wide open." Phillip Di Bella, Di Bella Group

"Finally, a “warts and all” work to counter the fable that’s sold as... The Cafe Dream." Simon O’Brien, Kickstart Coffee Shop

Join us for an evening of frank discussion and business reflection. Judy will be in conversation with Alex Milosovic – a former steel fabricator who operates the successful Extraction Artisan Coffee in Slacks Creek.

Dr Judy Gregory is a writer, editor, researcher, and former cafe dreamer. She and her partner operated The Letter Lounge Cafe & Gifts in Brisbane’s Red Hill from March 2016 until May 2018. Newbies in the Cafe is the book she wishes she had read before embarking on her cafe dream.
