Trombone Shorty is from New Orleans, a city he describes as ‘like a big musical gumbo.’ And this is reflected on Backatown. From big brass jazz to funk, hip-hop, R&B, soul and rock, there is something here for everyone. Shorty has said this album reflects what he and the band do on stage – just tightened up a bit. There are several instrumental tracks on the album that pack a trombone and trumpet punch. 

While Shorty has his musical roots firmly planted in New Orleans traditions he is creating a new direction for others to follow. One of the standout acts of the 2011 Byron Bay Bluesfest Trombone Shorty and his band Orleans Avenue are rumoured to be returning for the 2012 event. Get this album and I am sure you will be heading to Byron next Easter just to see him.
