Join Gretel Phillips for the launch of her anthology of poems Moonstruck.
These are poems about hurting and healing. Gretel Phillips turns to the natural world as she struggles with the turmoil of living. She takes strength from the constancy of the night sky and the calmness of the early morning moon as she struggles to understand the turmoil inside herself and the people who have helped or hurt her along the way.
She shows an ‘inner child’ growing into a woman, as she writes about her pleasure and pain as other lives touch hers. She learned how malevolent ‘the other’ can be when her younger self was deceived by honeyed words, and the “Cheshire smile” that hid cruelty. But she also learned to recognise the cruelty and drawing strength from the colours of the morning sky, has the courage to drag herself free.
The poems recognise that people who share the poet’s world are making their own life paths, and have suffered their own wounds.
Not all relationships are damaging and Phillips writes about the love she has experienced, the complex love of her Mother, a father’s support, the loving friendship of a sister and the joy of giving herself completely to a beloved child.
The poet sees these human passions also reflected in nature. In contemplating the beauty of the universe, Phillips has found her peace and, as these poems show this peace is not a passive thing.
Gretel Phillips is a poet, she has been writing poetry since the age of 13. She was born and educated in Toowoomba and grew up in Gowrie Junction a small country town west of Toowoomba. Moonstruck is her first publication and she has been working on this collection of poems for 3 years.
